Fun Facts About the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks is a beloved vacation destination to millions of people who are looking for a good time every single year. From groups of students to families and friends - we see so many people here at our Midwest vacation destination. At the Boathouse, we are excited to serve all of you this year with some fun new upgrades! From a new pool to a brand new menu, there are some exciting things happening. The Lake wasn't always this busy, though. Here are some fun facts about our area that even go back to the time when the Lake was first created.

At 17,741 acres, Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the largest park in Missouri.

Lake of the Ozarks covers 61,000 acres and contains 617 billion gallons of fresh water, what the city of St. Louis typically uses over a decade.

Roughly 3.5 million tourists visit Lake of the Ozarks from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The lake was the largest man-made lake in the United States when it was completed in 1931 by the Union Electric Co. of St. Louis.

The total cost to build Bagnell Dam was approximately $30 million (nearly $360 million in today's money).

The Lake of the Ozarks has been nicknamed the "Magic Dragon" because of its unique shape.

By creating 10,000 jobs, the construction of Bagnell Dam provided some relief during the Great Depression.

The original purpose of Bagnell Dam was to supply electricity to St. Louis.

When all of the Bagnell Dam floodgates are open, 1,212,000 gallons of water pass through the floodgates every second.

There are over twenty waterfront restaurants at the Lake of the Ozarks - but you all know where the best place to eat at the Lake of the Ozarks is *wink.*

With over 1,150 miles, The Lake of the Ozarks has more shoreline than the coast of California.

At its lowest point, Bagnell Dam is 130 feet below the surface of the Lake.

If you're planning a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks this summer, you'll have to make sure and include the best lakefront restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. At the Boathouse Lakeside Bar & Grill we will be featuring some amazing events this year, from live music on our new band stage, amazing drinks at the Tiki Bar, and new choices on our menu. Make plans to come and enjoy a LOT of time with us this summer - we can't wait to see you!
